The Baltimore Station located at 140 West West Street is part of a
non-profit organization that provides rigorous self-help programs for men
transitioning from the cycle of poverty, substance abuse and homelessness to
self-sufficiency. The service of the Station is invaluable to not only the
men there, but also to the community at large; these men are given the
resources and encouragement that promotes their ability to regain
self-sufficiency and become a valuable part of society again.

The Station has had a very busy 2007, with more work expected for 2008.
They have two special events coming up, the first of which is this Friday at
Bedrock (Eutaw and Baltimore Streets) for a live CD recording of The
Baltimore Station Band (5pm). The second of which is not until April.
Further details for both events are highlighted in the below email and are
attached to this email.

Hello to all the Friends of the Baltimore Station,

We have ended 2007 in a very up-beat fashion. The Groundbreaking Ceremony
for the new addition at the South Baltimore Station went extremely well.
Everyone from Senator to Governor to Mayor to Congressmen, City Council
President, Friends and Neighbors (and all those in between..) were present
to help usher in a new and exciting era for The Baltimore Station.

Of course, what made me the proudest was the large number of volunteers and
donors present. It is refreshing to be in the company of so many people
that are "Part of the Solution". Our organization cannot operate without the
community support that you give us and more importantly, the recovery
process of the residents would not be as effective. The retention rate for
our residents is almost 70% after 6 months. Most of you know that both
stations feel like home and that is because you bring "home" to the station.
Our modality of treatment is based on the Therapeutic Community model. That
includes the whole design of the building (mirrors all around to identify
the real problem), the credentials of the Director- Woody Curry is now a
Certified Professional Counselor (he's a Bad..) and the involvement of the
community.

Over the coming months of 2008, there will be many ongoing changes at SBS.
Construction has started and will require all of us to adapt as needed. The
parking will be impacted in the back of the station, the kitchen is already
in a mobile mode (!?!?!) and the power and water will be interrupted from
time to time...not to mention dust and general confusion. I will e-mail or
call the volunteer groups that might be affected in any particular week. We
will all get through this because this is excitement!!!

And for more excitement, make sure you mark your calendar for our Annual
Homerun for Recovery on Tuesday, April 17th from 6:30 to 9:30 at Nick's
Seafood Market at the Cross Street Market. Fun will be had by all-great food
and drink, live jazz band and live and silent auctions!!. Although The
Baltimore Station Band will not be playing at the event you can catch them
on Friday, February 8th at Bedrock** (see attached flyer). Let's all have a
great year together making a difference in our community and the lives of
others.

Peace-AL

 That thought is the problem."
